The Best Winter Getaways for When the Travel Bug Hits

Did you catch the travel bug and are now looking for your next getaway? Escape the cold and snow (or perhaps chase it) with a winter getaway. We put together a list of tropical, and not-so-tropical, vacation spots for you to flee to this winter.

Key West, Florida

You don’t have to travel outside of the continental United States for a tropical getaway. While January is the chilliest month of the year in the Florida Keys, the average temperature is still 74º – perfectly acceptable for swimming and laying out in the sun. Key West is sandwiched between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, making it a hotspot for fishing, boating, scuba diving, snorkeling, and lounging. While you’re there, make your way to the southernmost point of the continental United States and try some namesake Key Lime pie.

Florida is known for its rough hurricane season in the autumn months. While this shouldn’t be an issue for a winter vacation, be prepared for the infamous humidity and have your trusty Ranger Ready on hand for protection from mosquito bites.

Puerto Rico

Don’t worry about a passport for this tropical vacation. Puerto Rico offers an exotic island beach vacation, incomparable sightseeing experiences in the mountains and rainforest, and fun activities like surfing and snorkeling. There are many Puerto Rican cities that accommodate vacationers, but top spots include historical San Juan, the caves in Camuy, and the beaches and views at Mosquito Bay – which is just as buggy as it sounds, so pack your long-lasting bug spray in preparation.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Are pools, casinos, and sight-seeing more your speed? Las Vegas is a popular desert getaway in the winter months. Expect temperatures a little chiller than other vacation options, around the 60s, but you don’t have to worry about snow or rain. The city is close to plenty of excursions such as The Grand Canyon, hiking, and climbing trails, so you can get a taste of relaxation and adventure on a trip to Vegas.

And when hiking is on the agenda, be sure to pack your backpacking essentials for a safe adventure.

Park City, Utah

Even though it’s below freezing for most of the winter, Park City is an unforgettable winter trip. Skiers, snowboarders, or those who love the mountain-resort life will enjoy this vacation. Bundle up and head to Utah for snow sports in the colder months, mountain biking in the warmer months, and be sure to check out the Olympic Legacy Park and the world-renowned Sundance Film Festival.

When cross-country skiing is your thing, remember to keep performing your daily tick checks after a long day in the woods, and treat your clothes and gear with Permethrin fabric treatment for 40-days of tick protection. Cold weather doesn’t stop hungry ticks looking for a host!

When the winter travel bug hits, make sure you’re prepared with the essentials. And yes, that means stocking up on TSA-compliant products, like our travel size bug spray and treating your clothes, luggage and travel gear with Permethrin.

Whether you plan on relaxing at the beach, skiing in the mountains, or exploring the ancient underwater caves of Puerto Rico – Ranger Ready wishes you safe travels!
