WHAT ARE NO-SEE-UMS?

Tiny black bugs known as No-See-Ums (also called biting midges, sand gnats and biting gnats) can bite multiple times, leaving numerous painful, itchy welts that last for weeks. Worse, these insects are generally 1-3mm in length, and can sometimes permeate tents and window screens.

No-See-Ums are usually a nuisance to campers and hikers, gardeners, fishermen, and those who spend time outdoors, especially near water.  Female no-see-ums lay their eggs in moist environments such as swamps and salt marshes. There are more than 600 species of no-see-ums in North America, and 47 of them are found within Florida alone!

No-see-ums usually bite during the hours of dusk and dawn, and both male and female no-see-ums feed on plant nectar. However, female no-see-ums also bite hosts and feed on their blood in order to produce their eggs. While no-see-ums are not known to spread diseases to humans, their bites can cause a burning sensation accompanied by a small red welt. Allergic reactions and itching usually occur, and bites can sometimes become infected. Because of their small size, many people are unaware that they are being bitten until it is too late. That’s why it’s important to choose a lasting, highly effective No See Um repellent such as Ranger Ready Insect Repellent with Picaridin 20%

SAFE AND EFFECTIVE NO SEE UM BUG SPRAY

Ranger Ready No See Um Bug Spray uses Picaridin 20% as its active ingredient. Picaridin (also known as Icaridin) is a synthetic compound that mimics piperine, which is found in the group of plants that make black pepper. Picaridin emerged in the 1980s, when German scientists set out to create an insect repellent as effective as DEET, but without the potentially harmful side effects.

Ranger Ready Picaridin 20% is an unscented bug spray and can be easily applied to skin, clothing, and plastics.  It provides up to 8 hours of protection from no-see-ums, as well as other biting insects such as flies, chiggers, and gnats. Additionally, our Picaridin insect repellent will protect from mosquitos and ticks for up to 12 hours. Picaridin is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and is also registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an effective insect repellent.

Unlike DEET, Picaridin is not a neurotoxin. Ranger Ready no see um repellent can be used by the whole family, including children over the age of 1, pregnant women, and women who are breastfeeding. While DEET acts as a plasticizer and can damage plastics and other synthetic fabrics, Ranger Ready Picaridin 20% will not harm clothing or gear.

For two layers of protection from no-see-ums, Ranger Ready offers long lasting clothing-worn Permethrin 0.5% insect repellent. Permethrin is a synthetic chemical that acts like natural extracts from the chrysanthemum flower.  It should be applied directly to your clothing and gear, and will repel and kill ticks, mosquitos, and biting insects on contact for up to 40 days or 5 washes. Once fully dried, clothing and gear treated with Ranger Ready Permethrin 0.5% is safe to touch and has no odor.

To fully protect yourself and your family from vector-borne diseases, the CDC recommends that you wear both body-worn and clothing-worn insect repellents. At Ranger Ready, we offer the P2 PAK™ which provides both clothing-worn Permethrin 0.5% and body-worn Picaridin 20%. Use both to safely protect your whole family and make the most of your time together in the outdoors.
