THE BEST GNAT REPELLENT: RANGER READY
STOP BITING GNATS WITH AN EFFECTIVE AND LONG-LASTING GNAT REPELLENT
To prevent yourself from being bitten by Gnats, it is important to understand where gnats live. Most gnats prefer moist areas with organic material, such as houseplant soil or your garbage disposal. Some Gnats, like biting Midges, are attracted to swampy areas or fast-flowing streams and deep lakes. Pack Ranger Ready Scent Zero Picaridin 20% insect repellent on your trips if you expect to be near water and moist habitats.
ABOUT BITING GNATS
Biting gnats, like Black Gnats and Sand Flies, consume blood and will cause itchy welts on the skin. Unlike mosquitoes, gnats slice a small area of the skin before sucking out blood. Because of this, you may discover that a gnat bite is slightly more painful than a mosquito bite.
DO GNATS CAUSE DISEASE?
While it is unlikely that gnats will cause serious disease in humans, they can cause disease in animals. According to the Purdue University Vector Biology and Vector-Borne Diseases program, “Biting midges are extremely annoying…They have a much greater impact on non-human animals, both as biting pests and vectors of disease agents.”
SOME OF THE COMMON TYPES OF GNATS INCLUDE:
• Buffalo Gnats • Black Gnats • Eye Gnats • Sand Flies • No-See-Ums • Midges
Do Gnats Bite?
While there are many non-biting species of gnats, there are also a few that do. Biting midges, for example, are from the Ceratopogonidae family and include sand flies and black flies. They are generally tiny (about 1/25 to 1/8 inch long) and are grayish in color. Sand flies are typically gold, brown, or gray, measuring 1/8 inch long, and black flies are about 1/4 inch long. Sand flies are the least likely to leave you with gnat bites, but both midges and black flies are known to feed in swarms.
Where Do Gnats Come From?
It largely depends on the species, but in all cases, gnats will be close to two vital things: good breeding spots and plenty of food. Often, gnats lay eggs in moist places rich with organic material, like compost, decaying leaves, mulch, or soil. From there, they emerge in search of food: wildlife, your pets or livestock, or you.
Top Gnat-Infested Areas: Are You Living in These Areas?
If you’re wondering what states have gnats, they’re present all across the United States — but in some areas, they’re a lot more common than others. The infamous Georgia Gnat Line runs from Columbus through Macon to Augusta. Below this line, you will find some of the highest concentrations of gnats in the United States.
There are a few additional areas to be aware of as well. Biting gnats are most common in the southwestern deserts, the Atlantic Coast, Gulf Coast, Florida, Alabama, and the San Francisco Bay region. If you live in one of these areas, you’ll need protection!
